The 2020 college football season has not been very kind to the Big 12. So far, it seems like the league might not even have a team make the cut for the college football playoffs at all after Oklahoma fell for the second straight week and Texas lost a heartbreaker to TCU. Speaking of which, perhaps the Horned Frogs and Cowboys are the next two in line to win the league and perhaps represent the Big 12 in the college football playoff.
The Cowboys are climbing their way towards the top 15 at 3-0 on the year. It won’t be an easy path for the Pokes though with a home tilt with Iowa State (Oct. 24) and Texas (Oct. 31) but road trips to Kansas State (Nov. 7), Oklahoma (Nov. 21) and TCU (Dec. 5). Gary Patterson’s squad has less room for error having already dropped a game to Iowa State last weekend, 37-34.
It’s still early. Anything could and likely will happen this season. Texas isn’t much of a shock to me as I wasn’t very high on them this year anyways. But I did think Oklahoma was going to be a bigger factor than they’ve shown to this point.
I said this off-season Tom Herman needed to show major progress this season. He’s not off to a promising start. Herman and the Longhorns survived a wild one against Tech last weekend in a 63-56 shootout. Saturday, they dropped another thriller to TCU, 33-31. Texas was knocking on the door for a go-ahead touchdown in the game’s final two minutes but Keatontay Ingram fumbled the ball at the goal line and TCU was able to extinguish the rest of the game clock. What a brutal way to lose a game.
Herman is among some company I’m sure he would rather not be associated with. Maybe it helps that one of the other gentlemen in this graphic are in his division. But the fact of the matter is this…he has underachieved throughout his time in Austin. The clock is ticking and the seat is warming in the lone star state.
