South Carolina is all of the sudden in bit of a chaotic situation as Shane Beamer looks to finish up his first staff as head coach. Former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason was believed to be the Gamecocks’ top choice for Defensive Coordinator but he is headed to Auburn.
The Tigers have also caused another headache on the offensive side of the ball luring away Mike Bobo from what would have been his second season in Columbia. Additionally, Bobo is taking Will Friend. He had just joined the staff as the Gamecocks’ OL coach after serving in that same capacity at Tennessee the last three seasons.
Now, Mike Bobo is taking the same role out on the Plains under Bryan Harsin who takes over for Gus Malzahn. As the clock ticks, Beamer now needs a OC, DC and OL coach. Maybe they can set up a trade of sorts with Auburn and bring over Kevin Steele and Chad Morris–both of which are familiar with not only the SEC but arch-rival, Clemson, as well.
After a forgettable 2-8 season in 2020 and overall uncertainty of the program the last 12 months, it would have been easy for MarShawn Lloyd to take a look at the portal. For now, it seems like he’s committed to USC and still wants to be a Gamecock. Quite frankly it might be Beamer’s biggest win yet.
